Elevator Pit Waterproofing in Bel Air Using TREMproof 250GC

Elevator pits are constructed below grade, making proper waterproofing essential to protect the structure from groundwater intrusion and hydrostatic pressure. For this custom home in Bel Air, our team installed a complete below-grade waterproofing system around the elevator pit using TREMproof 250GC. Because access to the exterior of the pit becomes extremely limited after backfilling and construction is completed, proper substrate preparation, membrane application, detailing, and protection are critical to the long-term performance of the waterproofing system

Substrate Preparation and Membrane Installation

Before installing the waterproofing system, our team inspected and prepared the concrete substrate. Honeycombs, tie holes, surface imperfections, and other irregularities were addressed to provide a suitable surface for the waterproofing membrane. Special attention was given to inside corners, construction joints, penetrations, and transitions. After the preparation and detailing were completed, we installed TREMproof 250GC, a cold-applied elastomeric waterproofing membrane for below-grade applications. The membrane was applied at the manufacturer’s specified thickness to create a continuous waterproofing layer around the elevator pit, with membrane thickness and coverage monitored throughout the installation.

Membrane Protection and Project Completion

Before backfilling began, we installed Polyguard Polyflow drainage board over the waterproofing membrane to protect the system during backfilling and help manage water around the below-grade structure. The drainage board was secured at the top with a termination bar, and all terminations, transitions, and waterproofing details were checked before backfilling. The completed waterproofing system was then inspected to verify proper membrane coverage and detailing. At Surfacing And Waterproofing, we believe long-term waterproofing performance depends on proper installation, protection, and attention to detail.

Do elevator pits need to be waterproofed?

Elevator pits are constructed below grade, making them vulnerable to water intrusion from the surrounding structure and soil. Waterproofing is especially important because once the elevator equipment is installed and construction is completed, access to the exterior of the pit becomes extremely limited.

The appropriate waterproofing material depends on the construction method, substrate, site conditions, and whether the system is installed before or after the concrete is placed. For this Bel Air elevator pit, TREMproof 250GC was used as the elastomeric waterproofing membrane, with Polyguard Polyflow drainage board installed over it for protection and drainage.

The drainage board helps protect the waterproofing membrane from abrasion and displacement during backfilling while providing a drainage path for water around the below-grade structure. It also separates the waterproofing membrane from direct contact with the surrounding soil.
